Trial Series History

From time to time, a performer will undergo a number of tough singles matches known as a trial series. The reasons for the trial can greatly vary. It could be for a rookie looking to step up his game, or for a fat person to celebrate his diet. They tend to be extremely tough, and it is not uncommon for the competitor to lose every single match. Still, they are usually stronger for it, due to the valuable experience gained.
One note about this list; Kenichiro Arai had a series of matches called the "Kenichiro Arai Fresh Start Re-Pursuit of Skill" (loosely translated). It was 25 matches long, and ran from 1/16/2000 through 6/26/2000, and he won all but the last one. He followed that up by winning the NWA Welterweight Title on the first show after the 25th match. It wasn't exactly a trial, so I am not including it here.

Stalker Ichikawa Bosou 10 Match Series
The Bosou 10 Match Series was a series pitting the weakest wrestler in the world against famous opponents from the world of pro-wrestling. It ran from August 2000 through September 2002. In typical Stalker fashion, he lost every match. Several matches were performed in cosplay fashion, with Stalker taking on the persona of various famous wrestlers.

Hollywood Stalker Ichikawa Bosou 10 Match Series
After Stalker Ichikawa "retired", and returned as Stalker Ichikawa Z, he announced his intentions to start a new Bosou 10 Match Series. It followed the same premise as the first, but this time the names that came to face him were even bigger than his prior undertaking. He changed his name to Hollywood Stalker Ichikawa as the series progressed. He also performed one match under the ICHIKAWA character, which was a parody of the heel persona of opponent The Great Sasuke. Stalker managed to win that match, when Sasuke nearly killed himself, as usual. This would be the only win Stalker gained during this new series.

Iwasa Gundam Road to Formation ~ 15 Match Series
In the summer of 2003, Takamichi Iwasa found himself without a unit. He had been deceived by Crazy MAX. They spent several months aiding him in a "Takamichi Iwasa Strengthening Campaign" that he had been tricked into believing would end with his membership in the unit. When they chose JUN instead of him, he decided to take matters into his own hands and form his own unit. He joined up with Raimu Mishima, who  had recently been kicked out of Shin M2K for being terrible. He named the group Iwasa Gundam, and set out to recruit more members. The problem was, the Toryumon Japan office refused to recognize his group as an official unit. President Takashi Okamura agreed to recognize them as an official unit, if Iwasa could win a single match out his 15 match series. Due to a sudden crippling weakness to the Camel Clutch, he lost all 15. To his credit, he only actually gave up in the last match. The prior 14 were lost by Mishima throwing in the towel. The match against Stalker Ichikawa was considered to be their best chance, and Iwasa actually was close to victory. He put Stalker in a Camel Clutch of his own. Disaster struck when in his excitement, Mishima accidentally dropped the towel into the ring. Stalker won the match by TKO. The final match was against Mishima himself, who won with a broken arm. The pair left for warrior training in the US after the final match. They returned after finding their true American heritage as Michael & Daniel, the Florida Brothers.

Naoki Tanizakis' Road to DO FIXER ~ Surfing 10 Match Series
After joining Toryumon Japan from Toryumon X, Naoki Tanizaki had aligned himself with former surf enthusiast Genki Horiguchi. Horiguchi was a member of Do FIXER, so Tanizaki seemed to become a member by association. DF leader Magnum TOKYO was generally not impressed by Tanizaki, so he flat out told him he was not a member. Tanizaki pressed Magnum to allow him to join. Magnum agreed, if Naoki could win a single match in his ten match series. Magnum himself handled the first match, before Naoki faced a murderer's row of opponents. Naoki had one chance at victory, against perennial loser Shogo Takagi. Magnum interfered to ensure Naoki lost. After the initial ten matches were over, Magnum agreed to extend his trial by five matches. These all took place at the Odaiba Adventure King Mainichi Pro Wrestling premium matches. Magnum used the extra time to further embarrass Naoki. At one point he forced him to change his ring costume to swimmer style Speedo trunks. He also had to perform a dance with the similarly not-so-dressed cast of the swimming themed Fuji TV show Water Boys. Naoki lost all of his matches, and was outright refused membership to DF. He decided to change his hairstyle and join the Iron Perm team with Don Fujii & Second Doi. After the Rey de Parejas tournament, the Perms exploded, and Naoki was left laying in the ring. Magnum came out, and gave the unconscious Naoki his DF shirt.

He would spend several months training with Shingo Takagi in the newly established Dragon Gate USA dojo in Houston. Akira Tozawa Diet 7 Match Series
After his early 2008 bulk up brought him even less success than he had before, he began to see the limitations of being a great big fat person. He vowed to abandon his metabolic ways, and went on a diet. To celebrate his decreasing weight, he began the second trial series of his career. He was actually quite successful, winning three matches (albeit one by DQ). After defeating lifelong nemesis Don Fujii in the finale, he demanded Tozawajuku be allowed to challenge for the Triangle Gate. It would be his first challenge for the belts. The champion Zetsurin team refused to accept. Tozawa persisted, so the Zetsurins eventually agreed if he Tozawajuku unit was put up in return. Perhaps high off his win, the overconfident Tozawa agreed without consulting the others. They lost, so Tozawajuku ended. Undeterred, the slim & trim Tozawa quickly went to Shingo Takagi, saying that for Tozawa to reach the next stage of his career, he needed Takagi. They would go on to form KAMIKAZE.

Super Shenlong 50 Match Trial Series
Inspired by the success of the Tozawa Diet Series, Super Shenlong decided to take it one step further. He joked that he wanted a FIFTY match series. Whether he was joking or not, he got his wish. The series started in October 2008, and took over two and a half years to complete. The matches took place all over the DG radar. Some were on the regular tours, some were dark matches, some took place in NEX, and others on independent performances such as Buyuden & from WORLD-1. The finale was held in his hometown of Toki, in Gifu. Unfortunately for Shenlong, his efforts didn't pay off with an improvement in rank or perception.
